This lecture tells of a recent departure for me: contesting the role that the history and memory of the British Empire has played in the government- and right wing press-sponsored culture war. I will talk about the process of writing a book which seeks both to contest denial of the racial violence of empire and inform non-academic readers about British colonialism, and about my role working with Nicola Thomas and others on a new interpretation board and website for the statue of Sir Redvers Buller in Exeter.
